Sierra Gorda Biodiversity Carbon

This project involves the regeneration of natural forests with high conservation values. In exchange for environmental service payments, the owners of these forests commit to forest fire prevention and the cessation of livestock grazing in forests, logging and timber extraction, hunting and extraction of flora. These changes will result in the regeneration of forests and therefore the capture of more carbon dioxide. At the same time, the regeneration of the forests has important benefits for wildlife. Priority species that will be directly benefitted by the restoration and protection of their habitat will be felines such as the jaguar and puma, other mammals such as the armadillo and white-tailed deer, and birds such as the great curassow and emerald toucanet. The project takes advantage of the synergy achieved in the SGBR through payments for environmental services by CONAFOR, World Bank, and the Gonzalo Río Arronte Foundation and involves new donors such as Volaris Airlines, the State of Querétaro and IXE Bank. To date, 23,585.5 hectares of potential areas have been identified for this project.
