Restoration of Degraded Lands of Small and Medium Farmers through Afforestation and Reforestation

Overview

Fundación Chile, the leading non-for-profit organization in the country devoted to innovation and technological transfer, envisioned a project that could change the depressing prospect of the secano interior. Since 1999 it worked to develop a model of forest securitization that would promote: Improvement in the productivity of degraded lands through reforestation; Participation of land owners to generate economies of scale for land restoration activities; and Incorporation of state-of-the-art silviculture for improving forest growth.

Fundación Chile created SIF, a private company to:
  • Negotiate and implement lease agreements with land owners for developing reforestation activities that would provide for an annual payment and a percentage of net income from the harvest of forests to farmers and subsequent reforestation of their lands;
  • Implement management/commercialization agreements with forests companies to secure access to the best silviculture practices, improved planting stock and market access for wood production;
  • Support planting and supervision of all silvicultural activities;
  • Organize funding for the reforestation initiative

The project seeks to restore 2917.6 ha of degraded lands through afforestation.
