In 2003 Mikro-Tek initiated afforestation projects, using mycorrhizal inoculation, with twelve small-scale landowners in the secano region of central Chile. This project represents the carbon sequestered on degraded and eroded farm land. The initial Nerquihue project site was planted with approximately 375,000 Pinus radiata seedlings on 300 hectares in partership with a local landowner. This project was the first afforestation project to receive CDM registration in Chile, and since 2003 an additional 7,000 hectares have been planted, with the first field monitoring scheduled for 2012. Certified carbon credits will be available for sale starting early in 2013.
