Kikonda Forest Reserve Reforestation Project

Overview

The Kikonda Forestation is a prize winning project in the heart of East Africa. It comprises 120km² and employs more than 200 people. It is the first in the country to be granted CarbonFix certification for its one-of-a-kind positive social and ecological impact.

The forestation activity provides a secured workplace for over 200 people which enables them to enjoy a living standard above the Ugandan average. That includes housing, medical services and school education. The project has initiated a program to train people of the neighbouring villages in tree-planting. For the start phase 200.000 seedlings where provided free of charge to these people.

To protect rare species and regenerate natural habitats the project has set aside over 20% of its area for conservation purposes. Animals such as antelopes, hippos and monkeys have found a refuge there. By providing timber for the local market, the project is an important factor to reduce pressure of illegal logging in natural forest in Uganda, Congo and Sudan.
