After years of intense activism and lobbying from ecologists and indigenous groups, the Ecuadorian government finally signed the Yasuni-ITT Initiative agreement this past 2 August.  This is the first time in history that a government agreed by means of a binding agreement to leave fossil fuels underground.

The battle is still not won, however.  The government of Ecuador can declare the agreement null and void if the funding does not come through.  Ecuadorian president, Rafael Correa, is requiring that the first $100M come in the first 18 months, so the Initiative's supporters are already running against the clock.  If they cannot collect $100M in 18 months, they can't expect to collect $350M every year.  According to an article published by the environmental group FOBOMADE, "the Yasuni-ITT project confronts multiple threats; the global crisis puts doubt in its financial viability.  It is feared that the Ecuadorian government will sabotage the Initiative if the negotiating committee is not able to gather the necessary funding."




Tras años de intenso activismo y cabildeo por parte de ecologistas y pueblos indígenas, el gobierno de Ecuador finalmente firmó el acuerdo Iniciativa Yasuní-ITT el pasado 2 de agosto. Esta es la primera vez en la historia que un gobierno accede mediante un acuerdo vinculante a dejar combustibles fósiles bajo tierra.

Sin embargo, la batalla no está ganada todavía. El gobierno de Ecuador puede declarar el acuerdo nulo y sin efecto si no llega el financiamiento. El presidente ecuatoriano Rafael Correa requiere que lleguen los primeros $100 millones en los primeros 18 meses, así que los partidarios de la Iniciativa ya están corriendo contra el reloj. Si no se pueden recaudar $100 millones en 18 meses no se puede esperar que se puedan recaudar $350 millones todos los años. Según un artículo publicado por el grupo ambiental FOBOMADE: "El proyecto Yasuní-ITT enfrenta amenazas múltiples; la crisis global pone en duda su viabilidad financiera. Se teme que el propio gobierno ecuatoriano sabotee la Iniciativa si la comisión negociadora no lograr conseguir el financiamiento necesario."
