Environment Minister, John Odey, has said that the Federal Government is living up to the numerous environmental challenges facing the nation, even though certain forces seem to be drawing back the progress recorded.
He submitted last week in Abuja in his capacity as Chairman, National Committee On Ecological Problems (NCEP) at the opening of “Ecofair” that government’s awareness of the enormity of the environmental challenges facing the country informed the dedication of some percentage of the Federation Account as Derivation and Ecology Fund, which is statutorily shared as special intervention fund among the three tiers of government, to address the ecological problems.
He noted that the recent Presidential Initiative on Afforestation would give fresh impetus to efforts aimed at addressing all facets of ecological problems. "The long-term plan is that the Afforestation Programme will eventually feed into the National Program on Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD)."
