El Salvador along with Guatemala and Colombia have reduced their mangrove forests some 20% in the last 20 years, which means fewer natural water purifiers, as well as habitats for endangered species.

On the International Day of Wetlands, the Salvadorenian Center of Appropriate Technology (Centro Salvadoreño de Tecnología Apropiada (CESTA-Amigos de la Tierra)), with communities, are warning about the situation of the mangroves in the country.
