Summary Description: The World Resources Institute is seeking candidates for a Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Research Analyst for the Forest Landscape Initiative in the People and Ecosystems Program.
 
The RS/GIS Analyst will use satellite imagery to assess deforestation, forest degradation, and forest development occurring in Central Africa, Indonesia, and other primarily tropical forest countries. Spatial analyses will contribute to work to assess carbon stocks and changes and track forest development and history over time. The candidate will also lead projects to develop Forest Atlases for Central African countries using GIS to map logging concessions, logging roads, protected areas, and other relevant forest management information. The research analyst will collaborate with partner NGOs and government agencies in developing countries on data development, analysis, and capacity building.
 
This is a full-time staff position with benefits, and will require occasional travel to Central African or other countries for periods of several weeks to a month or more to collaborate with partners and colleagues.
 
Major Responsibilities: Collecting and compiling data in a number of formats, researching and developing attribute databases, using satellite imagery to develop roads datasets, acquiring and analyzing satellite imagery; working with a diverse group of collaborators, including organizations based both in the U.S. and in Central Africa; maintaining GIS hardware and software; installing software upgrades securing statistics, maps, and other information from governments and private organizations; documenting data, procedures, and analyses; preparing maps, posters and graphics summarizing findings; and responding to requests for information and data.
 
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have Master’s degree in remote sensing, geography or natural sciences and a minimum of one year of work experience applying remote sensing and GIS to environmental issues (or a bachelor’s degree and at least three years of work experience).
 
The position requires:
·         Proficiency in remote sensing/GIS software including ArcGIS, ERDAS Imagine, or eCognition (or equivalent)
·         Experience in spatial analysis and modeling (e.g., use of ArcGIS Model Builder, Python scripting, or equivalent)
·         Familiarity with GPS and field data collection
·         Strong analytical and communication skills
·         Fluency in French, both spoken and written, is required; strong English speaking and writing skills required
·         Experience working in central Africa or other developing countries including Indonesia strongly desired
·         Ability to work on a variety of projects while meeting tight deadlines
·         experience teaching the use and applications of GIS software
·         International work experience and good cross-cultural and inter-personal skills.
·          Proficiency graphics and website development software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Front Page) with an ability to produce high quality maps for publication highly preferred
·         Knowledge of forestry and tropical ecology is also desirable.

Description sommaire: Le World Resources Institute (WRI) recherche un candidat, au poste de chargé d’études et de recherche en SIG et télédétection, dans le cadre de son – Initiative sur les paysages forestiers dans le cadre du programme People and Ecosystems.
 
Le chargé d’étude et de recherche en SIG et télédétection utilisera des images satellites pour évaluer la déforestation, la dégradation forestière et le développement forestier en Afrique centrale, en Indonésie et dans d’autres pays forestiers tropicaux. Par l’analyse spatiale, le candidat évaluera les stocks et flux de carbone et le développent forestier. Le candidat sera responsable du développement des Atlas forestiers interactifs du WRI pour les pays d’Afrique centrale. Il utilisera les SIG pour cartographier les concessions forestières, les routes d’exploitation forestière, les aires protégées et d’autres informations pertinentes sur l'aménagement forestier. Le chargé d’étude et de recherche en SIG et télédétection participera à la production de données, à la conduite d'analyse et au renforcement des capacités en SIG et télédétection, avec les partenaires du WRI (ONG et organismes gouvernementaux) dans les pays en voie de développement.
