Development (Fundraising) Intern

Internship period: Spring/Summer 2010, Part-Time or Full-Time (willing to be very flexible to accommodate student schedules)
Position summary
WRI’s Development Department is seeking a graduate student, college senior/junior, or recent college graduate to help with fundraising, donor stewardship, event planning, grants management and other development activities. The Development Intern should be a high-energy, confident individual with excellent research and database/computer skills. The intern will be supporting a fast-paced department with many big projects. The applicant should therefore be comfortable juggling multiple priorities, be detail-oriented, possess excellent interpersonal skills, and be a team player.
Major responsibilities
  1. Research: Conduct prospect research and write summary papers on corporations, foundations, and individuals, using internet, print and electronic sources, as well as in-house files and documents and interviews with fundraising staff. Specific attention to matters relating to corporate sustainability practices and individual wealth capacity and philanthropic inclination.
  2. Database Management and Communications: Update and access funder database (Raiser’s Edge) as needed. Create and edit mailing lists, and assist in preparing and sending out electronic and hard copy communications to WRI’s donors as may be necessary for meetings, WRI events, and announcements.
  3. General and Administrative Support: Support WRI’s corporate, foundation, government, and individual fundraising and outreach efforts (including donor appeals and mailings and special events). Assist with management of Development department and backstop Development Coordinators as needed.
Qualifications
Proficiency in complete Microsoft Office suite required. Fundraising experience, database management, writing and/or graphic design experience is a plus.
Opportunities
This is a fast-paced, busy department in a well-respected environment and development institution. This internship will provide significant insight into and understanding of various aspects of non-profit fundraising, including event-planning, stewardship of corporate, foundation, government and individual funders, as well as the solicitation process involved in researching, identifying, and soliciting potential new funders. Additionally, the intern will leave this internship with knowledge of Raiser’s Edge (a valuable database tool used in many non-profits). This is a great introduction into the business side of a non-profit organization. The intern will also receive considerable exposure to the programs at WRI (see below). The intern will have the opportunity to attend “brown bags” and presentations by in-house and external experts in various fields related to environment, development, and communications. The large number of interns and young staff present a great, fun, working environment.
