The Ecosystem Marketplace’s Forest Carbon Portal is a clearinghouse of information, feature stories, event listings, project details, ‘how-to’ guides, news, and market analysis on land-based carbon sequestration projects—from forest to farm.

Deforestation and land-use change are responsible for over 20% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity decline, and an incredible loss of ‘ecological capital.’ Discussions of how to incorporate forestry and agriculture more fully into cap-and-trade schemes and voluntary carbon markets are moving at a rapid pace, and the quick evolution of the discourse – combined with data gaps and a lack of knowledge of the capacity-building activities being organized around the world – has called for a centralized hub of information to which stakeholders can turn. For these reasons, we have created the Forest Carbon Portal.

Launched at the December 2008 UN Climate Conference of the Parties in Poznan, Poland, this satellite site to the Ecosystem Marketplace exists to fill knowledge and ‘market intelligence’ gaps with the goal of stimulating progressive land-based carbon market offset projects policy in the regulated markets, and successful pilot projects in the voluntary markets. It is designed for the investor, the student, the policymaker, the project developer, the analyst, the broker, the retailer, and the conservationist. In other words, if you have an interest in land-based carbon sequestration, these resources are for you.

The website is divided into seven tabs:

On the Home tab, you will find Ecosystem Marketplace exclusive feature stories on terrestrial carbon issues, daily news listings, a global map of terrestrial carbon project locations, discussion forum posts and much more.

The Articles & News tab showcases the most recent Ecosystem Marketplace terrestrial carbon feature stories, a daily news archive, a Terrestrial Carbon Newsletter archive, and a search tool for the contents of this section.

Under Library & Tools, you will find resources to help you navigate the world of forest carbon, from a ‘Forest Carbon 101’ guide to project design methodologies and market analyses, and a Toolbox-specific search tool.

The Project Inventory tab brings you to a dynamic map of terrestrial carbon projects around the globe, searchable by user-specific project criteria.

Under the Member Directory tab, you will find a list of members of the forest carbon community as well as the Forest Carbon Portal job board.  We invite you to join as a Project Manager to have your projects added to our inventory.

The Discussion Forum is the place to engage with other members of the community.  Here you will find the latest discussions listed by topic.

Finally, the Events tab features a listing and geographic display of terrestrial carbon-related events around the globe, as well as a search tool specific to the calendar.
